Cairns Airport have belatedly released their numbers for January. Domestic is interesting.

While negative growth it’s the best monthly domestic number in a while and continues recent improvement. The shift forward in Chinese New Year should be positive for the month so it should be relatively good number. Most of the volatility we see in this data is around seasonally unseasonal monthly lunar events at this time of year.

The Covid-19 virus only hit at the end of the month and International was awful down 16.6% after a 10.5% fall in December.  However most international visitors arrive on domestic routes. Obviously there is also a lot happening domestically at this time with school holidays and seasonal relocation.

Difficult but my sense is this number could have been worse but maybe wont save a February bloodbath.
