Sydney we have a problem

Cairns Airport beat the Friday media dump with the Christmas eve dump of November traffic data. The good news is that there is some recent indication of a potential bottom in domestic passenger declines.

So maybe it’s time to revisit the route data where decline on the CNS-BNE route has previously been noted. Annual route passenger data from BITRE for year to October 2019:

Melbourne flat. Brisbane is showing signs of turning. Sydney not yet. The Sydney route may be an indicator of weaker international traffic. While remaining the largest gateway, Sydney is also lower international growth than Melbourne or Brisbane.

Load factors on all three routes remain above industry average for Australia.
